Recently, RDA Northern Rivers was honoured to have been invited to hear what is important for our region’s youth through Takeover Lismore.
The ABC’s Takeover Lismore is a weeklong program that provides a forum for young people from our region to share their ideas with the community. Young people aged from 14 to 16 from 9 schools in the Lismore LGA shared their stories in the Takeover Lismore competition. You can listen to the winning stories here.
The 34 winners joined the Takeover Lismore Summit from 20 to 24 of May 2024, where they worked with ABC staff to professionally produce their stories. The students had their night of nights on the red carpet with a special screening of their stories at the Starcourt Theatre on Tuesday 21 May and will be featured on the ABC.
The Takeover Lismore Summit was an opportunity for the Takeover winners to work together in teams and have their ideas for creating a better space for Lismore youth heard. Supported by youth mentors, the teams worked their ideas into a series of presentations that were shared with the Lismore community at Oaks Oval on 22 May.
A judging panel consisting of Lismore City Mayor Steve Krieg, ABC Journalist and Presenter Miriam Corowa and Deb Samuels from the Foundation for Regional and Rural Renewal (FRRR) gave a big thumbs up to the presentations. The challenges addressed in the presentations ranged from employment and training in regional areas, pollution and waste, to safety and diversity.
The young people also expressed a desire to stay in the region, calling for more opportunities to study and build their careers locally. RDA Northern Rivers will continue to work with key agencies on projects, like the Jobs Northern Rivers Platform, to support more of our young people to stay and contribute to the growth of our region.
