Published on Monday 6 May 2013, the New South Wales North Coast Bioenergy Scoping Study was commissioned from the Institute of Sustainable Futures (ISF) at the University of Technology, Sydney. It was funded by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage and managed by RDA-NR.
The study provided an overview of the main bioenergy technologies and noted a number of key opportunities for the region including a pyrolysis plant in Ballina and the revitalisation of the sugar mill facilities at Condong and Broadwater.

The NSW Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) provided an annotated bibliography and resource list for those interested in finding out more about bioenergy and its potential uses.
In 2016 the Bioenergy Scoping Study was followed by a ‘First Order’ Pre-Feasibility Study and a second report examining the social license for bio-energy in the region. These studies were funded by NSW Trade & Investment and the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage.
The Pre-Feasibility Study provides assessments of available biomass in the region and potential options for bioenergy operations in the region, including an operational node in Casino. The social license study held a number of consultations in the region and found a generally high level of support for bioenergy in the region.
